Rochester Institute of Technology Prototypical Classroom Project

In the Fall semester of my Junior year at RIT, I took a class called Materials and Specifications. For our final project, we were put into groups of four to complete a design for a prototypical classroom in our college of art and design. In addition to the design of the classroom, we also had to utilize what we had learned throughout the semester by making specifications for each material and furniture piece used. My group worked well together and split the work evenly. My primary focus in addition to contributing to the design was working on some of the specifications and the furniture budget.

Floor Plan

We started out with dimensioning one of the classrooms in our building. We came up with multiple layouts that would be possible with the furniture and space that is provided in one classroom space. The following plan shows three of these possible layouts including the hallway.

Use of Color

Using different colors other than blue can help show different uses of classrooms and can even help with wayfinding throughout the building. The following renderings show just three additional colors that could be used in these classrooms.

Furniture Legends

The following furniture legends show three of the different layouts we thought that the classroom could have.
